Don’t Wait Till It’s Too Late
Tell your parents you love them!
Sometimes, it’s hard to say what’s on our minds, especially when it comes to our parents…
You see, I never had a close relationship with my parents.
Growing up an only child, they were always busy working and I often felt alone. When we had time together, I felt like I had to please them and perform up to their expectations. This made me insecure and I suffered from bouts of low self-confidence. It didn’t help that my mom was especially strict with me, which made me more resentful.
Things got better when I went overseas to study. The distance apart made me cherish the times when we were together. But the feelings of wanting to seek my own path and independence carried through till I got married…
That was when I realized how much they really meant to me ❤️.
There are 2 memories that stand out:
One was the night before I moved out of the family home. I think that made my parents really sad. I was too, as it signaled a new stage of my life where I would need to set up my own household. I told my mom I would visit often and we would have weekly dinners.
Being Asian, my family doesn’t really express our feelings easily but I could tell that that sentence of reassurance comforted her.
The second memory was the night before I was about to give birth to my first child. I was so scared and the first person I thought of calling was my mom. Though I don’t recall the exact conversation, I felt like a child again, listening to her words of encouragement and that she will be praying for me.
I can replay these moments in my head AGAIN and AGAIN..
But my mom would have no idea how important she was to me, so… I decided to TELL her…
I wrote her a letter and I wrote my dad one too. I cried for quite a while writing my Mom the letter, it brought back many memories of old – a mix of happy and bittersweet moments. I handed them the letters during Christmas and *drumroll*…. there wasn’t much of a response.
My Mom acknowledged by saying 2 things, 1) I write well and 2) chided me for not completing my piano lessons (which was one of the things I apologised for not doing). While my Dad didn’t say a word but I could tell from his body language that he was appreciative.
In spite of that…
The experience of writing the letter was a form of closure and part of the healing process for me. I was able to face up to those past memories knowing that they made me who I am today 😊.
You can do the same too! I created this FREE Canva love letter template to share with you. This template is easy to edit, so you can quickly put together your heartfelt letter of gratitude (psst…. I created a Christmas version 🎄 too so this could replace your annual Christmas card).
Showing our parents how much we love them isn’t just about material gifts or money – it’s about taking the time to express our genuine appreciation for everything they do for us. So why not give them a gift from the heart this Christmas?
In a nutshell, a ❤️ love letter:
- Mends strained relationships and build stronger connections with your parents
- Provides an opportunity to express your appreciation and gratitude for the unconditional love they have shown you
- Releases any negative feelings or resentment that may have built up over time, while providing a sense of closure and peace
- Helps you reflect on all of the memories and lessons that you have learned from them
- Makes for a much more meaningful Christmas gift since it comes directly from the heart with no strings attached

About Me
Hi! I am Serene, a mom of 2 young children, children’s author and an avid coffee drinker 😊.
Earlier this year, I read a post by the Woke Salaryman on the stuff he wished he told his mom before she got a stroke.
That was a wake-up call for me and I knew I had to write a letter to my parents to tell them what was in my heart.
I wrote my book Mommy, Mommy, Where Is The Moon? to improve my relationship with my 4-year-old daughter. And now, I want to mend things with my parents too.
I hope you were blessed and healed by the Love Letter To My Parents Canva template.
